Gulf Fisherman’s Association 1336 Bayview Dr., Cearwater, FL 33756 Dear Legislator: The Gulf Fisherman’s Association and our companion organization Shareholders Alliance produce more than half of the Gulf of Mexico's Grouper and Red Snapper The Catch Share programs implemented in the Gulf of Mexico have rescued our fishing industry. For the first time in modern history we have a sustainable year-round fishery and real jobs. Because of our rebuilding progress, in 2012 both recreational and commercial sectors will get increased quotas, another first in history. This is good not only for fishermen, but also for the 98.5% of taxpayers whose access to this resource is through the Commercial and Charter fishing industry. Legislation has been proposed that would reverse this progress. We urge you to vigorously oppose legislation that infringes on the opportunity of fishermen and management councils to consider catch shares as a management alternative. Some of these proposals are disguised as job saving bills but essentially remove Catch Shares as a management option. They undermine the good but difficult work of NMFS, the Gulf Council, and the fishing industry which collaborated to produce these outstanding results. Rest assured, these measures would hurt fishing jobs, not help them. Below is an outline of the progress that has been made in just the Grouper fishery. The Red Snapper fishery, which initiated its catch share program first in 2007, has similar outstanding success. The two programs now work together to make the future even better. Click here to read a recent article about Florida's Grouper. All of these business improvements took place in the worst economy of our lifetimes and in spite of the Gulf oil spill. No matter where you look in the world, you will not find a better fisheries success than the Gulf of Mexico Catch Share programs. Your support in this will help assure this progress. Respectfully, Gulf Fisherman’s Association Board of Directors: Glen Brooks: President, Cortez, FL 941-920-7302 Dean Pruitt: Vice President, Clearwater, FL 727-512-2609 Jim Clements: Board Member, Carrabelle, FL 850-544-5703 Brad Kenyon: Board Member, Tarpon Springs, FL 727-639-0643 Jason Delacruz: Board Member, Seminole, FL 727-639-6565 John Schmidt: Board Member, Palm Harbor, FL 727-937-7822
